photo by / @drewtrush / The cottonwood tree (genus Populous) grows best in riparian areas or wetlands, and is one of the largest hardwood trees in North America. It is also the state tree of Wyoming, Nebraska, and Kansas, and just happens to blanket river bottoms throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
