There is usually too much or too little rain, and the health and livelihoods of rural people are dependent on a force which is indifferent to them. It has less direct effect on the urban population, which seems to grit its teeth and carry on. For these two chilled Javanese girls huddled under a rice basket, the monsoon has lost its magic. With the rains, Mount Galunggung's debris has turned their city of Tasikmalaya into a nightmarish landscape of gray ash. by natgeo
