Photo by @tyronefoto | The region of Codó in the northern Brazilian state of Maranhão was such a fascinating place to explore. I was photographing a story for NatGeo magazine on the “quilombos” of Brazil. Present day quilombos (they are called maroon communities in other countries) are descendants of slave communities, many of which had escaped bondage, and are found all over Brazil. These men are “tuning” their drums by warming them, preparing for a religious festival in one of the quilombo communities. #brasil #brazil #codo #maranhão @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #onassignment by natgeo
